Medicare and Mondays

December 13, 2014  |  By Bonnie In Soapbox

I am proud to debut Medicare and Mondays, my musical, impassioned, plea to Congress to pass H.R. 5644, the Medicare CGM Access Act of 2014.* H.R. 5644 would have Medicare cover the cost of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) devices. CGM technology is a life-saver for many diabetics, including yours truly, who are insulin-dependent.

A petition created by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) underscores the legislation’s importance and urgency.

The continuous glucose monitor (CGM) has been shown to improve glucose control — preventing dangerous high and low blood sugars — and is recommended by national diabetes clinical guidelines and covered by nearly all private health plans.

However, Medicare does not yet cover CGM devices, leaving seniors with insulin-dependent diabetes vulnerable to high rates of hospitalization and emergency room visits.

Read the JDRF petition at thepetitionsite.com.

Please, please please share the video, spread the word and sign the JDRF petition urging Medicare to provide coverage for CGM technology.

This singing sister of the pump thanks you!

PS: Read the back story of this video shoot and my letter to the president of the United States.

*Update: This bill died in Congress, but a new bill, H.R. 1427 Medicare CGM Access Act of 2015, was introduced on March 18, 2015. Please subscribe to this blog for my updates.

It is a total disgrace that Medicare will not cover the meds that are needed to preserve someone’s life while waiting for a cure for diabetes to be discovered! I love you Bonnie, and support your amazing effort in fighting justice while dealing with a less than humane decision in what Medicare will and will not cover.
